FP2544 : Influence of astigmatism on unaided near and intermediate vision in pseudophakic patients

Abstract

Study Design – Prospective, Observational.

Purpose- To determine whether residual astigmatism positively or negatively affects near (NV) and intermediate vision(IV) in patients who have undergone cataract surgery with a foldable IOL.

Methods –
Inclusion Criteria:
Pseudophakics with Distance BCVA of 20/20 or 20/20p

Study Parameters:
NV and IV with ETDRS LogMar chart
Results
Plano: 34 eyes, NV 20/105, IV 20/48.
<-0.50 DC: 36 eyes, NV 20/80, IV 20/37.5.
-0.75 DC: 22 eyes, NV 20/63, IV 20/35.
-1.00 DC: 16 eyes, NV 20/80, IV 20/35.
<+0.50 DC: 18 eyes, NV 20/105, IV 20/60.
>+0.75 DC: 12 eyes, NV 20/150, IV 20/70.
Mixed: 12 eyes, NV 20/80, IV 20/44

Conclusion
Myopic Astigmatism of upto 0.75DC provided good NV and IV by increasing the depth of vision, with minimal compromise in distance vision, whereas hyperopic astigmatism had a deleterious effect on vision, across all ranges. No significant difference was found in with the rule or against the rule astigmatism
