FP2529 : Pentoxifylline: A boon for ischemic neuropathies

Abstract

Purpose:
Aim of the study was to compare visual outcome and VEP changes in patients of ischemic and non ischemic anterior ischemic optic neuropathy treated with intravenous methylprednisolone and pentoxifylline and compare with patients receiving methylprednisolone only
Material & method:
10 patients of ischemic and nonischemic AION were enrolled for the study and randomized into 2 groups. Group A received methylprednisolone with oral pentoxifylline and group B received methylprednisolone only.
Results:
Visual acuity improved in both groups from pre treatment values but better improvement was seen in group A. Non specific VEP chances were also recorded in both groups.
Conclusion:
pentoxifylline combined with methylprednisolone has a better visual outcome in AION patients as pentoxifylline is a vasodilator increase blood flow to optic nerve and halts or regresses the ischemic injury to optic nerve.
