Abstract

Purpose-The study sought to describe the clinical presentation pattern of pediatric cataracts and to investigate the factors associated with poor vision after surgery at a tertiary care hospital in Northern India.Method-This is a retrospective study carried out on 50 patients operated on between January 2022 to June 2022 .The patients under study were aged between six months and 16 years, and suffered from bilateral or unilateral cataract.Result – Our study is based on 50 children, males – 29 and females – 21, with congenital cataract. Of the 50 patients, 43 (86%) had bilateral cataract and 7 (14%) unilateral cataract .The age at surgery ranged from 10 months to 16 years, only 4% receiving surgery below 1year. In 6 (12%) cases, no improvement was seen because of deep amblyopia.Conclusion-Understanding the preoperative clinical features of congenital/developmental cataract is very useful for the planning of comprehensive treatment strategies of this vision threatening eye disease.
