Abstract
STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective observational study PURPOSE: The purpose of this study is to evaluate the risk factors, clinical profile and treatment modality in atypical variant of retinopathy of prematurity (ROP). METHODS: The study included 475 premature babies screened for ROP over a 2 year period. 20 developed atypical ROP. RESULTS: Atypical ROP included 8 hybrid ROP, 9 zone half ROP, 2 aggressive ROP with pre-retinal bleed and 1 aggressive ROP with traction at arcade. Risk factors included very low birth weight (mean BW=1460 grams), longer NICU stay ( >10 days) with 3 suffering from neonatal sepsis and 1 requiring blood transfusion. Mean gestational age was 31 weeks and 8 were twin pregnancy. All were treated with Anti-VEGF followed by laser and 1 required surgery. ROP regressed in all patients treated with Anti-VEGF followed by laser.
CONCLUSION: Current study revealed the incidence, risk factors and importance of timely and adequate treatment in dealing with atypical ROP.
