Abstract
Purpose: Blood and ocular fluids are being increasingly used as a sample source for molecular and biomarker profiling and the status of these factors across the matched samples can help better understand etiopathogenesis.
Methods: Tears and blood were collected prior to the surgery. Aqueous humor (AH) and vitreous humor (VH) were collected during surgery. Flow cytometry-based multiplex ELISA was used to measure 54 soluble factors, like cytokines and chemokines and the proportion of immune cells determined by cell type-specific antibody-based phenotyping.
Results: A positive association was observed in 50% of factors among the sample types studied. 85% of the soluble factors exhibited a positive association (P<0.05) between AH and VH samples with a positive correlation (P<0.05) in the proportion of immune cells.
Conclusion: The association of immune factors among the sample types opens up the perspective of using non-invasive or minimally invasive sample sources for molecular studies.
