Purpose:to analyze the clinical phenotypes of ocular syphilis and to report a rising trend of ocular syphilis
Methods:Analysis of all syphilis positive patients presenting with uveitis to the outpatient department from 2014 to 2021. Demography, clinical presentations, ocular involvement in terms of anatomic site and treatment were documented. Primarily the yearly incidence and its proportion to cumulative other uveitic cases in the OPD were sought. Secondary outcomes included clinical manifestations and treatment outcomes.
Results:Out of 6800 newly diagnosed patients of uveitis, 107 eyes of 72 patients were identified as having ocular syphilis. It contributed to 1.06% of all uveitis patients. We noted a 9x surge in the number of syphilis and majority of them were young patient’s.Clinically the patients presented with a myriad of presentations.
Conclusion: The burden of syphilis is re-emerging in the society which needs immediate attention.
