FP2011 : CORRELATION OF HISTOPATHOLOGICAL FEATURES AND CLINICAL FINDINGS IN PTERYGIUM

Purpose: To correlate the clinical & histopathological features of pterygium
Methods:48 pterygium cases were clinically graded, excised & subjected to histopathological evaluation of epithelial & stromal changes. Those associated with OSSN were re-evaluated independently.
Results: Majority were females 79.16% with complaints of Cosmetic 62.5%, foreign body sensation 52% & redness 62%. Grade 2 extension noted in 58% with astigmatism >2.5D in 60.41%. Histopathological features included squamous hyperplasia 75%, dysplasia 11% & metaplasia 2 cases. Increased inflammation seen in 69 %, stromal vascularity with haemorrhage 53% & fibrovascularity in 48%. Lymphocytic stromal infiltration & perivascular distribution seen in 68% and & 64% respectively. OSSN was identified in one.
Conclusion: Clinical redness correlated significantly with vascularity, epithelial hyperplasia & lymphocytic stromal infiltration.
