FP0167 : Green Laser Posterior Hyaloidotomy in Pre-Retinal Hemorrhages

Abstract

PURPOSE: Pre-Retinal hemorrhage presents with profound visual loss. Resolution may take weeks or months without intervention. However, because the hemorrhage may cause permanent macular changes before it resolves, green laser posterior hyaloidotomy may be indicated in some cases.
Methods: This was a prospective study conducted on 20 patients. All the patients presented with sudden diminution of vision with presenting visual acuity of less than 20/200. Causes included valsalva retinopathy , diabetic retinopathy, central retinal vein occlusion, and blunt ocular trauma. All 20 patients underwent green laser Hyaloidotomy. All patients were re-evaluated at 1 week, 1 month, 3 months, 6 months and 1 year.
Results:Visual acuity in all cases before laser treatment was between hand movement and 20/200. After laser treatment, the hemorrhage instantly drained into the vitreous cavity, resulting in rapid improvement of vision. Complete clearing of macular area was seen within a week in all eyes.
