Abstract

To compare the safety and efficacy of Manual Small Incision Cataract Surgery(MSICS-PRO) and phacoemulsification in treating cataracts under topical anaesthesia
Randomized prospective study
Consecutive patients with cataract were randomly assigned to have phacoemulsification or MSICS-PRO by a single surgeon experienced in both techniques. Surgical complications, operative time, uncorrected (UDVA) and corrected (CDVA) distance visual acuities, Pain grading and surgically induced astigmatism were compared.

The mean time was statistically significantly shorter in the MSICS-PRO group (4.8 minutes ± 2.4 [SD]) than in other group (12.2 ± 5.6 minutes) (P<.001). The pain sensitivity in both groups were equal and no difference was found.

Both techniques achieved excellent visual outcomes with low complication rates. Because MSICS-PRO is significantly faster, less expensive, and less technology-dependent done under topical, patient can have the same painless procedure as in phacoemulsification.
