FP1551 : Ethambutol-induced optic neuropathy ( EON ): a retrospective study of incidence and risk factors .

Abstract

Aims: To determine incidence of EON after implementation of revised RNTCP 2016 at tertiary care centre in Central India and to identify risk factors .We compared incidence of EON with its incidence prior to implementation of revised regime. Material and Methods: Retrospective observational study performed, data collected from the DOTS centre after implementation of RNTCP 2016 guidelines and was analysed. Result: Among 1676 patients who underwent TB treatment, 13 (incidence =0.28% ) developed EON. In unadjusted analysis, compared to patients without EON, those with EON had greater dose (mean 1087.50 vs1029.5 grams, P=0.042), longer duration of treatment (average 9.27 vs 7.79 months, P=0.038). Increase in dose and duration is significantly associated with increased left average RNFL thickness. Conclusion: EON is dose and duration-dependent, with no dose being absolutely safe. Also no significant difference found in the incidence before and after the implementation of the RNTCP 2016.
