FP1488 : Prevalence of Retinopathy of Prematurity in South Gujarat

Abstract

Study Design: Cross sectional
Purpose: To Find Prevalence of Retinopathy of Prematurity in Low birth weight babies in South Gujarat
Methods: It was conducted among 508 babies born with <or= to 2 kg birth
34 weeks of Gestational age or mature babies with risk factors as per the Pediatric Society of India
screening criteria for Retinopathy of Prematurity. All babies were dilated with combination drops of
Tropicamide 0.8%w/v and Phenylephrine hydrochloride 2.5%w/v. All babies’ retinas were examined up
to ora serrata (with Retcam3 Netra).ROP was diagnosed and classified by following the International
Classification of ROP. For data analysis, Chi square test and ANOVA was applied.
Results: Out of 508 babies 386 were low birth weight babies.(&lt;2 kg). ROP Prevalence was found to be
around 6% among them.
Conclusion:ROP is emerging epidemic in India. It is highly prevalent among low birth weight and
premature babies. It is essential to screen them and bring awareness in the community for ROP.
