Abstract

Study design: retrospective case series. Aim: Report the clinical features, treatment and outcome in patients with HSV keratitis. Method: Retrospective review (4 years). Results: Of 173 patients, males 106 (61%) and females 67(39%). Mean age 36.5 (17.1) years. HSK types: epithelial keratitis in 39 (23%), stromal keratitis without ulceration in 77 (45%) and with ulceration in 15 (8.7%), endothelial keratitis in 28 (16.2%), keratouveitis in 4 (2.3%), & mixed pattern in 12 (6.9%) eyes. Treatment: Topical acyclovir in 33 (19%), Topical & oral acyclovir in 8 (5%) eyes, only oral acyclovir in 131(76%), and topical steroid in 123 (71%). Surgery: cyanoacrylate glue in 3, therapeutic graft in 1 eye . Outcome (105 eyes): 9 (9%) healed without scar, 92 (88%) healed with scar, 3 (3%) had bacterial ulcer, 1 (1.0%) eye perforated. 16 (15%) eye had recurrences. Conclusion: Most common type of HSK was stromal keratitis. Most patients healed with medical treatment. Recurrences were not uncommon.
