Abstract
Purpose: To compare phaco attributes of fluid volume (FV) & ultrasound parameters between variable infusion (adaptive fluidics, AF) and gravity-fed fixed infusion (GF) systems
Methods:108 subjects randomized (1:1) into G-1, AF (maintains stability by dynamic infusion), & in G-2, conventional GF. Same venturi machine was used with differently specified cassettes, under identical settings. FV, avg phaco power (U/S AVE), absolute phaco time (APT), elapsed phaco time (EPT) were analyzed
Results: Cataract grades & axial length were comparable (p=0.442, 0.605). Mean FV in G-1 was 90.2+/-19 ml Vs G-2 129+/-44 (p<0.0001). U/S AVE was comparable (G-1 18%, G-2, 20.4%; p=0.087) however, EPT was more in G-2 (9.5+/-4.9 sec) compared to G-1 (5.3+/-3.6 p<0.0001). Total phaco energy, APT in G-1 was 21.79+/-8.65 compared to G-2 31.27+/-7.3(p<0.0001)
Conclusion: Real-time vacuum-linked dynamic infusion in venturi systems uses lesser fluid & phaco energy within the eye, compared to gravity-fed infusions
