Study Design: Prospective study
Purpose: To assess contrast sensitivity (CST) in children with myopia and myopic astigmatism (MA)
Methods: Children between 8-18 years with unilateral or bilateral emmetropia/myopia with or without MA having BCVA of 6/6 were included. CST was assessed using Pelli Robson chart in standard room illumination of 25-30cd/mm² and prescribed chart illumination of 72-75cd/mm².
Results: Forty eyes with emmetropia, 64 eyes each with myopia and compound MA (CMA), 56 eyes with simple MA (SMA)were included. Mean CST in log MAR in 25-30cd/mm² among emmetropes and myopes was 1.57 and 1.49 (p <0.003) and with 72-75cd/mm² was 1.65 and 1.60 (p< 0.15).
In subjects with CMA, CST was 1.48 (in 25-30cd/mm²) and 1.6 (in 72-75cd/mm²). In subjects with SMA CST was 1.5 (in 25-30cd/mm²) and 1.59 (in 72-75cd/mm²).
Conclusion: In children with myopia and myopic astigmatism CST was less in reduced illumination.
