Abstract
Study design: Cross Sectional Study Purpose: To correlate macular thickness and visual acuity in patients with diabetic retinopathy(DR). Method: A cross sectional study was conducted in 216 patients who were diagnosed with diabetic retinopathy. Visual acuity of both eyes were assessed using Snellen chart and Macular thickness was measured using Optical Coherence Tomography(OCT). Result: The correlation coefficient of visual acuity versus OCT center point thickness was 0.54. Paradoxical improvement in visual acuity with increased center point thickness was seen in 8% patients while 38% showed paradoxical worsening of visual acuity with a decrease in center point thickness. Conclusion: There is a modest correlation between OCT measured center point thickness and visual acuity. However, a wide range of visual acuity may be observed for a given degree of macular edema.
