VT0229 : Phacoemulsification in a case of scleritis with Rheumatoid arthritis.

Abstract

Scleritis is vision threatening, painful inflammation of the sclera. One third to half of patients with scleritis are associated with some systemic disorders. Cataract formation in patients with scleritis can be secondary to both scleral inflammation and corticosteroid therapy. Here, we present a rare case of 58 year old female who presented with diminution of vision in left eye for 6 months. On ocular examination, her best corrected visual acuity was 6/6 in right eye and finger counting at 3 meter in left eye. On slit lamp examination cataract was present in left eye and right eye was pseudophakic. Scleritis was diagnosed based on clinical features such as excruciating pain with congestion of deeper episcleral vessels, scleral edema and congestion. She was on oral steroids for treatment of rheumatoid arthritis for past 1 year. She was planned for left eye Phacoemulsification with PCIOL implantation. On follow up after 15 days, her best corrected visual acuity was 6/6 in left eye.
