Abstract
Study design – Retrospective chart review
Purpose- To analyse the anatomical and functional outcome of conventional macular hole surgery and correlation with preoperative hole characteristics
Methods- 697 eyes which underwent vitrectomy ILM peeling and gas followed by prone positioning over 10 years from a single centre was included. Details like demographics, procedural details and visual acuity were extracted from EMR. Macular hole index, hole form factor and minimum linear diameter were calculated from Heidelberg spectralis and only type 1 closure was considered success.
Results- 569 eyes achieved closure after one surgery. 67/128 underwent resurgery and 36 closed.501/601 SF6 and 68/96 C3F8 closed. Success rates were MLD<400 89,2%. 400-800 78.9% and >800 65.1%. 28 patients developed FTMH during follow up in other eye over a mean 19.4 months
Conclusion:This single centre large study gives guidelines for when to do conventional MH surgery and when to consider other methods
