Abstract
STUDY DESIGN: A retrospective chart review
PURPOSE: To determine the various etiological factors and clinical profile at presentation of traumatic cataracts.
METHODS: Patients presented between the duration of March 2021 and October 2023 were retrospectively reviewed for their demographic profile, cause and mode of injury, duration since injury, clinical profile, type of cataract, surgical intervention, intraoperative complications, and visual outcome.
RESULTS: 40 eyes of 40 patients were included in the study of which 32 were males with 23 children aged <18 years. Delay between trauma and presentation varied from 1 day to 8 years. 21 patients had penetrating injury and the remaining 17 eyes sustained blunt trauma. Postoperative BCVA of 6/18 or better was observed in 26 patients.
CONCLUSION: Mode of injury, duration of presentation following trauma, involvement of central corneal zone, and presenting visual acuity were the major prognostic factors affecting the final visual outcome.
