Abstract

Study Design: Assessor masked, controlled prospective interventional study.
Purpose: When beta2 mediated relaxing effect on ciliary muscle is blocked by Timolol maleate 0.5% eye drop, then there is increase of tonic accommodation, thus presbyopia is corrected.Therefore purpose of the study is to determine and compare the near point of accommodation of the presbyopic subjects before and after instillation of Timolol maleate 0.5% eye drop.
Methods: We recruited 40 emmetropic subjects of presbyopic age (80 eyes), and randomly assigned them to intervention group and Control group of 20 subjects each and subjected them to binocular instillation of one drop of Timolol maleate 0.5% eye drop and Normal saline eye drop once only respectively.
Results: Near point of Accommodation was closer to eye by 5.26 +/- 2.48 cm at 4 hr ( P< 0.001).
Conclusion: One drop of Timolol maleate 0.5% eye drop instilled binocularly can achieve a correction of 2.66 D of presbyopia at 4 hrs.
