Abstract
Study design: Retrospective case series. Purpose: To analyze correlation between MRI and histopathology in optic nerve extension (ONE) in retinoblastoma (RB). Method: Retrospective case series of RB analyzed for ONE on MRI and correlated with histopathology. Results: Of 35 cases with clinical optic disc involvement, ONE was seen on MRI in 23(66%) – involving optic nerve head (ONH) in 11 and retrolaminar in 12 (median length 5.5mm). Post-enucleation histopathology showed ONE in 19(54%)-involving ONH in 8, up to lamina cribrosa in 4, and retrolaminar in 9 (median length 4mm). Positive predictive value of MRI for ONE was 57% and negative predictive value was 50%. Conclusion: Clinico-radiological diagnosis of ONE might not always be accurate. Histopathological diagnosis is confirmatory and guides management in these cases.
