Study design-Descriptive, Prospective
Purpose-To study clinical spectrum & recovery patterns in patients of acquired isolated OMNPs
Methods-Patients >5years-age with idiopathic/ischemic/traumatic/compressive OMNPs were included. Demographic & ocular details,& a detailed squint evaluation were documented. Recovery pattern at 3 & 6 months was noted.
Results-OMNP was more common in adults,in the order VI>III>IV nerve.Ischemic cause(35%) was followed by idiopathic(26.3%). III nerve palsies were all unilateral,& all ischemic palsies were pupil-sparing. >50% of patients with VI nerve palsy showed improvement by 3 months and >80% by 6 months.By 6 months,>50 patients showing complete recovery had ischemic & idiopathic palsies.Small baseline deviation correlated with better recovery.
Conclusion:Acquired isolated OMNPs are mostly ischemia-related. >80% cases fully recover by 6 months.VI nerve palsy of ischemic/idiopathic etiology & small baseline deviation were associated with self-recovery.
