Abstract

Purpose: To evaluate an effectiveness of primary phacoemulsification (P for control of acute primary angle closure (APAC).
Methods: In this Prospective non-comparative series, patients presenting with the clinical features of APAC underwent phacoemulsification within a week after a control of IOP with systemic and topical anti glaucoma medications (AGM). The outcome measures were best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA), IOP (mm Hg), number of quadrant with visible posterior trabecular meshwork (PTM) on gonioscopy and number of AGM.
Results: Fifteen eyes of 14 patients were enrolled. Baseline mean (SD) BCVA 0.14 (0.12), IOP 38 (13.54), gonioscopy 0.13 (0.35), number of AGM 4.2 (2.31) significantly improved after phacoemulsification at the last follow-up of 3 months i.e. BCVA 0(0) (P 0.001), IOP 17.2 (4.21) (P 0.001), gonioscopy 3 (0.66) (P 0.001), number of AGM 0.4 (0.51) (P 0.001).
Conclusion: Primary phacoemulsification is an effective and safe procedure in aborting APAC.
