FP0471 : Understanding Keratitis in Bihar: Epidemiology and Microbiological Perspectives

Abstract

Purpose: To determine the demography, risk factors, and causative organisms of microbial keratitis (MK) in Bihar. Material and methods: Retrospective review of 2303 patients with MK (non-viral) presented in four years. Results: M: F was 1.86 to 1 and mean age 48.4± 16.5 years. Common risk factor was corneal injury followed by ocular surface diseases and DM. Unsupervised use of corticosteroids was in 29.2% of patients (odds ratio, 0.17). Median size of ulcers was 5 mm, BCVA <20/400 in 51.4% of patients, and corneal perforation in 14% of patients. The smear and culture positivity rate was 75.4% and 47.9%, respectively. Common causative organism was fungus, followed by bacteria. Aspergillus spp. and Staphylococcus spp. were the most commonly identified organisms. All bacteria showed good sensitivity to vancomycin. Conclusion MK is a common ocular morbidity in Bihar, so the knowledge of the epidemiology of MK can provide a valuable approach to disease prevention, diagnosis, and management.
