Abstract
INTRODUCTION -Optic atrophy refers to optic nerve shrinkage caused by degeneration of retinal ganglion cell axons characterised by optic disc pallor. The secondary optic atrophy shows optic disc swelling. The optic nerve head architecture is lost and disc margins become indistinct. In compressive aetiology- Intracranial meningiomas constitute 15-25 % and suprasellar meningiomas constitute 5-10%.
CASE REPORT- A 52-year-old female with no comorbidities presented with complaints of blurring of vision of the right eye for 2 months. On evaluation, right eye vision – CF 1.5 metre, left eye WNL. The right eye showed a 4 mm pupil with positive RAPD of grade 2. The right eye fundus revealed a pale disc and tortuous vessels. MRI of the brain showed a space-occupying lesion of the planum sphenoid and tuberculum sellae measuring about 2.1x2x2.1cm suggestive of Meningioma.
CONCLUSION- The mainstay treatment in secondary optic atrophy to know the cause and treat and provide low vision aids .
