FP0041 : OUTCOME OF SYMPATHETIC OPHTHALMIA – AN ANALYSIS OF 43 CASES IN A TERTIARY EYE CARE CENTER IN KOLKATA

Abstract

METHODOLOGY AND DESIGN: Retrospective cross sectional study of 43 patients of sympathetic ophthalmia (SO).
PURPOSE: To analyze the clinical profile, visual outcome, imaging characteristics and treatment given.
RESULTS: Of the 43 patients diagnosed with SO, the majority were males(76.74%) with mean age of 34.60 years; the common cause of SO in our study is penetrating injury (34.9%). Ultrasound B scan showed choroidal thickening (37.2%). Fundus fluorescein angiography at presentation showed pin-point leaks(95%) and disc leak(50%). The patients were followed-up for an average of 40 months. 76.7% of patients were treated with intravenous steroids. The
most common steroid sparing agent used was azathioprine (81.4%). The common complications in follow-up were cataract(34.6) and glaucoma(27.9%). Initial and final visual outcome of the patient were compared. The average time for development of SO in our study is 77.3 months.
