Abstract
A 26-year-old female presented with gradual loss of vision for 8 months. On examination, the visual acuity in the left eye was the perception of light.Iris neovascularization was observed.Fundoscopy was inconclusive, as hazy media were observed in the left eye with the optic disc barely visible.Imaging followed.Ultrasound revealed a well-defined mass of regular outline with detached retina and an internal floating membrane suggestive of vitreous hemorrhage. On MRI,T2 hypointensity was observed. The mass was 18-fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG). Raised lactate dehydrogenase levels indicated tumor tissue necrosis. An enucleated mass on histopathology showed a mixed cell type category IV large (COMS) melanoma with microscopic involvement of the inner sclera.Reports show a raised 2-year mortality rate following the opening of avenues for research into globe salvage options for the future.A high probability of misdiagnosis exists, clinical suspicion exists, and imaging aids diagnosis.
