Purpose: This study aimed to assess the content, quality, and educational value of the content of top 50 live surgical videos on pediatric cataract surgery according to view rate on YouTube
Methods
YouTube was searched using terms related to pediatric cataract surgery. Videos were analyzed on the number of views, likes, dislikes, comments, information quality of the video, and surgical steps description
Results
Video length of uploaded videos ranged from less than 1 min to 20 min. Of these 99% were uploaded by individual surgeons and 95% edited videos. 70% of videos had either written or oral commentary. The difficulties faced were highlighted in only 20% of the surgeries.
Conclusion
The educational quality of surgical YouTube® videos on pediatric cataract surgery is heterogenous . A peer review process can improve the quality of uploaded videos. Highlighting of pearls and difficulties faced during surgery might be of help to novice surgeons.
