FP0037 : Strategies to control the progression of myopia in children

Abstract

Myopia is the most important cause of visual impairment in children worldwide. In India, prevalence is estimated to increase to 48.14% by 2050. There are many treatment strategies to control its progression. Some commonly used, yet ineffective strategies include undercorrection of glasses, pin hole glasses, blue light blocking glasses, bifocal glasses, progressive addition spectacle lenses, and day time single vision contact lenses. There are other strategies which have been proven to work in slowing the progression. These include
Behavioral Intervention:
i. Increased time spent outdoors
ii. Reduced near tasks
iii. Reduced time on Digital Devices
Optical Treatment:
i. Spectacle Lenses
(a) Defocus-Incorporated Multisegment (D.I.M.S.) Spectacle
(b) Highly Aspherical Lenslet (H.A.L.) Spectacle
ii. Contact Lenses
(a) Soft Multifocal Contact Lenses
(b) Orthokeratology
Pharmacological Treatment:
i. Atropine Eyedrops
