Abstract

Purpose: Periocular scarring following surgery or trauma is of great aesthetic and functional concern and is difficult to predict. Although various non-surgical and surgical treatment strategies are available, it is still difficult to improve excessive scarring.Material and methods: A 51 years old male presented with ptosis, horizontal palpebral fissure shortening due to periocular scarring following a history of trauma. Patient was treated with four doses of intralesional 5-fluorouracil (50mg/ml-0.9ml) plus triamcinolone (40mg/ml-0.1ml) at every two weeks interval. There was significant improvement in scar pliability and reduction in erythema, pruritus and pain. Following this patient underwent medial canthal reconstruction surgery to improve horizontal palpebral fissure shortening.Results: There was significant cosmetic and functional improvement.Conclusion: Management of periocular hypertrophic scars continues to be a challenge and no single therapeutic option is best.
