Abstract
STUDY DESIGN- Prospective observational study
PURPOSE- To analyse the demography, intensity & management of bear attacks
METHODS- All patients attacked by bear
RESULTS- 2 male patients, farmers by occupation were mauled by bear leading to severe facial laceration, globe luxation & subsequent cosmetic disfigurement. Both hailed from the district of Chitradurga & resided in the rural area which has a significant population of bears. They reported to our hospitals after a delay of about 30 hours leading to loss of the crucial first few hours of treatment. They both underwent multiple surgeries for enucleation, facial bone reconstruction & facial cosmesis under interdepartmental approach from Ophthalmology, oral & maxilla facial department along with department of plastic & reconstructive surgery.
CONCLUSION- Bears attack maximally on the face leading to severe facial trauma with eye & cosmetic disfigurement. It requires a multi modal approach with a multi disciplinary approach
