Abstract
Purpose:Prevalence of type 2 DM in patients with pterygium.Methods:Cross-sectional study was conducted in tertiary care eye hospital among patients with pterygium,posted for pterygium excision surgery.study was conducted over 3months.25 patients were enrolled.All cases of operable pterygium were taken up for surgery&studied.Only patients with primary pterygium were included.random blood sugar levels were monitored,if found deranged, patients were further investigated for FBS,PPBS,glcosylated Hb.Previously diagnosed diabetics&patients with other systemic comorbidities were excluded.Results:Out of 25 patients,mean age-43yrs. 15 patients(60%)-males.10 patients(40%) had deranged RBS levels(>130 mg/dl),further investigated by FBS,PPBS,glycosylated Hb. 6 patients(24%)were newly detected type 2 DM patients-they were referred to physician for further management.Conclusion:Though relationship between pterygium&diabetes is not significant,role of oxidative stress needs further investigations.
