Abstract
Infectious scleritis is caused by myriad of organisms and can lead to devastating consequences if not diagnosed early. Retrospective review of medical records of 35 patients clinically diagnosed as infectious scleritis from 2018-2023 was done to study the clinical feature, risk factors, microbiological profile and treatment outcome. 25 of them had predisposing factors.21 were culture positive (5 pseudomonus,3 MRSA ,6 Mycobacterium TB ,2 nocardia and 5 fungus). Multifocal scleral abscesses were seen in 6 eyes. All were treated with intensive antimicrobial therapy.11 cases underwent scleral debridement and additional scleral patch graft was done in 5 of these eyes.33 cases had good resolution with therapy. One had recurrence which was culture negative on repeat scraping. One eye had to be eviscerated. Early diagnosis, microbiological confirmation, appropriate medical and/or surgical intervention are essential to improve the final outcome of infectious scleritis.
