FP2911 : Topical insulin for the treatment of non-healing corneal ulcer.

Case series

PURPOSE
To determine the role of topical insulin in the management of non-healing corneal ulcer.

METHODS
This study was conducted in a tertiary care facility in Delhi, India. Patients presenting with non-healing corneal ulcers even after installing topical antibiotics for three to four weeks were taken. Detailed ophthalmic evaluation was done and systemic predisposing factors were considered. Regular insulin eye drops 25IU/ml were given for 6 to 8 weeks and progression of corneal ulcer was noted. Topical antibiotics/antifungals were also continued.

RESULTS
Signs of healing were noted in the ulcer within one week of installation of topical insulin and ulcer was noted completely healed within 6 to 8 weeks.

CONCLUSION
Insulin eye drops is an effective management strategy for the management of non-healing corneal ulcers irrespective of systemic predisposing factors.
