VT0618 : A Teaching guide to ensure optimum silicone oil injection in vitreoretinal surgeries

Abstract

Silicone oil is an important adjuvant in most VR Surgeries which is associated with complications related to overfill and underfill. Overfilling can cause increase in IOP, Silicone oil induced glaucoma, pupillary block, silicone oil migration into the anterior chamber, postoperative inflammation, pain, etc. Underfilling can cause inadequate tamponade and recurrent retinal detachment. It is essential to know how to ensure optimum silicone oil fill in VR surgeries, especially for PGs and VR fellows. Technique: 3 pars plana ports made. 1 connected to infusion cannula. 1 is connected to vent. 1 is connected to silicone oil injector. After doing FAE, silicone oil air exchange done. first vent is removed once silicone oil is almost filled. After globe is formed, second port is removed. Wait till silicone oil remaining in the infusion cannula to slowly trickle back into the globe to ensure complete fill. Ensuring optimum silicone oil fill is an art which all vitreoretinal surgeons must master
