VT0546 : Throwback Surgery- Open Sky Vitrectomy

Abstract

Open sky vitrectomy is a surgery that is seldom practiced today and is usually not advocated. However, challenging surgeries like surgery for Stage V ROP started with the open sky technique. Some of the downsides and difficulties faced in this technique include- the parallax caused due to operating through fluid, continuous egress of ocular contents and suprachoroidal hemorrhage.
In this video, we showcase 3 challenging cases where we performed open sky vitrectomy as a desperate attempt, to save their only seeing eye. The indications of open sky vitrectomy in these cases included-
1. Extensive corneal opacity
2. Post bomb blast management of extensive scar tissue and a total RD
3. Stage V ROP Surgery
Although open sky vitrectomy is a challenging surgery to perform, the results can be rewarding, especially if this is the only seeing eye of the patient.
