VT0034 : Broken Vitrectomy Cutter: A Ballistic Foe

Abstract

While technological advancements have improved the efficiency and versatility of vitrectomy cutters, there is always a possibility of malfunction or unintended consequences.
In this video we describe three instances when a cutter broke and moved forward with significant force. If a cutter were to malfunction or behave like a ballistic projectile, it could potentially cause damage to the retina or other structures within the eye.
It is crucial for VR surgeons to exercise caution and be vigilant during vitrectomy involving cutters when close to retina. They should closely monitor the functioning of the instruments and be prepared to respond quickly in case of any complications or malfunctions. The early warning signs of such an eventuality are discussed in the video. Following established safety protocols and guidelines, as well as constant feedback to the industry, can help minimize the risks associated with such complications.
