FP2891 : Efficacy and safety of melatonin in treatment of chronic central serous chorioretinopathy

Abstract

Aim: to assess efficacy and safety of melatonin in treatment of patients with chronic CSCR (central serous chorioretinopathy). Method: hospital based prospective study was done on 20 patients (20 eyes) with chronic CSCR visiting tertiary eye centre from October 2022 to September 2023. 10 cases were given oral melatonin 3mg TID; rest were given placebo after proper clinical evaluation. BCVA (best corrected visual acuity) and OCT were done at baseline and then on day 1, 1 month and 3 months. P-value < 0.05 was considered statistically significant. Result: Both BCVA and CMT (Central Macular Thickness) improved at 1 month follow-up in cases treated with melatonin. No change was seen in BCVA or CMT in control group. Conclusion: BCVA and CMT significantly improved with oral melatonin in patients with chronic CSCR. Melatonin is safe, well tolerated and effective in treatment of chronic CSCR.
