FP2354 : A CLINICAL STUDY OF IOFB ASSOCIATED WITH ENDOPHTHALMITIS IN A TERTIARY EYE CARE CENTRE

Abstract

Purpose: To assess demographics and RF for endophthalmitis in intraocular foreign body cases.
Method: Retrospective study at a tertiary eye care center (Sep 2022 to May 2023). Patients with IOFB were divided into groups with and without endophthalmitis. Personal data, IOFB characteristics, wound location, and time to report were compared. Microbiological evaluation was done. Data was statistically analyzed.
Results: 31 patients had IOFB; 10 developed endophthalmitis (32.3%). Most IOFBs associated with endophthalmitis were concrete, located in the vitreous cavity, averaging 4.47mm. All cases followed corneal injury with delayed presentation (mean: 7.4 days). One case yielded S. epidermidis, others had sterile cultures. Statistically, IOFB size (p=0.02), type (p=0.023), and time to presentation (p=0.002) were associated with endophthalmitis risk.
Conclusion: Recognizing IOFB risk factors for endophthalmitis is crucial for prompt intervention and prevention of ocular fatality.
