Abstract

A 28 year old woman with bilateral high myopia (-8.50 DS OD and -14.00 DS OS) and moderate anisometropic amblyopia in the left eye was treated with part time occlusion. Good compliance to occlusion resulted in improvement of BCVA from 6/24 to 6/9 in the amblyopic eye. The patient was then found to be a suitable candidate for pIOL and gained an UCVA of 6/6 OD and 6/9 OS after surgery. Our case highlights the presence of neuroplasticity in adults and that occlusion can effectively treat amblyopia in adults. Beyond the scope of refractive surgery as a treatment modality for amblyopia, our case highlights how effective occlusion may make amblyopic patients candidates for refractive surgery with prognosis comparable to that of patients without amblyopia.
