Abstract
Design:Retrospective case series
Aim: To evaluate the outcomes staged surgery with intravitreal bevacizumab (IVB) & SF6 tamponade for complicated tractional retinal detachment (TRD) with uncontrolled intraoperative haemorrhage
Method: Eyes undergoing surgery for diabetic TRD were with insufficient haemostasis (precluding complete membrane dissection/endolaser) were closed with IVB 1.25mg/0.05ml and 2ml of 100% SF6. On post op day 15, eyes with RD underwent a second surgery with silicon oil tamponade.
Results: 153/980(15.6%) eyes required staged surgery. At 9-months follow up, anatomical success was 100% in eyes requiring single surgery alone & 85.5%(94/110) after second completion surgery. A poorer baseline BCVA, longer duration of symptoms, higher diastolic blood pressure and macula off RD were associated with a poorer post-operative BCVA (p < 0.05). No adverse complications were reported.
Conclusion: Stage surgery is safe and effective rescue technique for complicated diabetic TRD.
